About Botola Pro
History
The Botola Pro traces its roots to championships organized during the French protectorate, first under the USFSA from 1915, then via the Ligue du Maroc de Football Association from 1922. Following Morocco's independence in 1956, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) was founded in January 1957 and took over the organization of the national championship, which became the country's premier football competition. The league underwent several major changes over the following decades. Professionalization of Moroccan football was officially enacted in 2011 and implemented from the 2011-2012 season, with the creation of the National Professional Football League (LNFP) to oversee club management. The competition adopted its current name, "Botola Pro," from the 2007-2008 season, amid rising broadcast rights and sponsorship deals. More recently, the league introduced Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in February 2020, followed by virtual offside lines in October 2020 — making Moroccan football one of the pioneers of these tools in Africa.
