History of the Portugal national team

Founding and Early Years

The Portugal national team is governed by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), founded in 1914. For decades carried by individually brilliant generations without ever winning a major title, the team had to wait until 2016 to claim its first great trophy.

Team Evolution

Portugal play some of their home matches at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon, one of the great venues of Portuguese football.

Great Managers

Fernando Santos delivered Portugal's only two major titles: the 2016 European Championship, beating France in Saint-Denis, and the 2019 UEFA Nations League on home soil. Roberto Martínez then took charge of the team until its elimination at the 2026 World Cup.

Iconic Players

Eusébio, top scorer of the 1966 World Cup, remains one of the greatest forwards in Portuguese football history, alongside Luís Figo, the 2000 Ballon d'Or winner. Cristiano Ronaldo, international football's all-time top scorer, wore the captain's armband during the Euro 2016 triumph.

Major Achievements

Portugal won their only Euro title in 2016, beating France 1-0 after extra time on a goal from Éder despite Cristiano Ronaldo going off injured early in the match, followed by the 2019 UEFA Nations League. At the 2026 World Cup, Portugal reached the Round of 16 before losing to eventual champions Spain (0-1).

The Team Today

Following their 2026 elimination, Portugal are entering a transitional phase, while retaining one of the richest talent pools in Europe and a regular place among the top nations in the FIFA World Ranking.
