History of the Algeria national team

Founding and Early Years

The Algeria national team, nicknamed "the Desert Foxes" (Fennecs), is governed by the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), founded in 1962 after the country's independence. It established itself from its earliest World Cup appearances as a nation capable of upsetting the biggest powers.

Team Evolution

Driven by a pool of talent drawn from its diaspora and domestic league, Algeria's national team built an attacking playing identity that produced several stunning upsets on the continental and world stage.

Great Managers

Vladimir Petkovic, the Swiss head coach, now leads the Fennecs, continuing a tradition of head coaches who guided Algeria to its two continental titles.

Iconic Players

Rabah Madjer, hero of the 1987 European Cup final with FC Porto and a pioneer of Algerian football at the World Cup, and Lakhdar Belloumi, voted African Footballer of the 20th Century by CAF, rank among the greatest stars of Algerian football. Riyad Mahrez, the current captain and key figure in the 2019 continental triumph, now carries that legacy forward.

Major Achievements

Algeria have won two Africa Cup of Nations titles (1990, on home soil, and 2019). At the 2026 World Cup, Algeria were eliminated in the Round of 32 by Switzerland (0-2), after finishing second in their group.

The Team Today

Under Vladimir Petkovic, Algeria rank among the top nations of the African continent in the FIFA World Ranking.
