FC Metz

Founding and Early Years

The club's roots trace to Cercle Athlétique Messin, founded on 20 February 1919, but it was in 1932, upon turning professional, that the club took the name Football Club de Metz.

Club Evolution

Nicknamed "Les Grenats" (The Garnets), after their traditional colour, the club play at the Stade Saint-Symphorien, built in 1923. FC Metz are renowned as one of French football's most emblematic "yo-yo" clubs, frequently alternating between Ligue 1 and Ligue 2.

Great Managers

Henryk Kasperczak won the 1984 Coupe de France. Marcel Husson (1984-1989) remains associated with the "Miracle of Barcelona," a 4-1 win at the Camp Nou in the 1984 Cup Winners' Cup, as well as the 1986 Coupe de la Ligue and the 1988 Coupe de France. Joël Muller, the club's most emblematic coach (1989-2001), led the team to the 1996 Coupe de la Ligue and numerous European seasons.

Iconic Players

Robert Pirès, developed at Metz's academy, remains the greatest player produced by the club before his legendary career at Arsenal.

Major Achievements

FC Metz have won two Coupe de France titles (1984, 1988) and two Coupe de la Ligue titles (1986, 1996), without ever winning Ligue 1, along with four Ligue 2 titles (1935, 2007, 2014, 2019).

The Club Today

Led by Luc Holtz since 2026 and chaired by Bernard Serin, FC Metz play in Ligue 2 for the 2026-27 season following a further relegation, true to their reputation as one of French football's classic "yo-yo" clubs.
