History of Monaco
Founding and Early Years
AS Monaco was founded on 24 August 1924, with roots tracing back to 1919. The club turned professional in 1933, played its first Division 1 season in 1953, and won its first title in 1960-61. They play at the Stade Louis II, opened in 1939 and entirely rebuilt in 1985.
Club Evolution
Nicknamed "Les Monégasques" or "Le Rocher" (The Rock), the club wear the diagonal red-and-white sash inherited from the Grimaldi family's coat of arms, a Genoese pattern dating to the 12th century. The diagonal-stripe design is often credited to the influence of Princess Grace Kelly around 1960.
Great Managers
Arsène Wenger (1987-1994) won the 1987-88 title and the 1990-91 Coupe de France. Jean Tigana (late 1990s) led Monaco to the 1999-2000 title with a golden generation. Didier Deschamps (2001-2005) took the club to its only Champions League final, in 2004, lost to Porto.
Iconic Players
Thierry Henry emerged under Wenger before joining Arsenal. Youri Djorkaeff lit up Monaco's midfield in the 1990s. Kylian Mbappé, an academy product, broke through during the 2016-17 season before his transfer to PSG.
Major Achievements
AS Monaco have won eight Ligue 1 titles, five Coupe de France titles, and one Coupe de la Ligue, as well as a 2004 Champions League final, without ever winning a European trophy.

Led by Filipe Luís since July 2026 and chaired by Dmitry Rybolovlev, majority owner since 2011, AS Monaco qualified for the 2026-27 Europa Conference League, remaining renowned for its academy and young-talent scouting model.
