Founding and Early Years
Football Club Lorientais was founded on 2 April 1926, succeeding "La Marée Sportive," a works club created the previous year by fish traders at the Keroman fishing port. This maritime origin has left a lasting imprint on the club's identity.
Club Evolution
Nicknamed "Les Merlus" (The Hakes), after the fish emblematic of the port of Lorient, the club adopted its orange-and-black checkerboard shirt in 1926. They play at the Stade du Moustoir, officially named the Stade Yves-Allainmat in tribute to a former mayor of the city.
Great Managers
Christian Gourcuff, the central figure in the club's history across three spells between 1982 and 2014, built Lorient's reputation for polished, attacking football. Yvon Pouliquen led the club to its greatest achievement, the 2002 Coupe de France win against SC Bastia.
Iconic Players
Yoann Gourcuff, Christian Gourcuff's son and a pure product of the Lorient academy, became a star of French football before joining AC Milan and then Olympique Lyonnais. Fabien Audard holds the club's all-time appearance record, a symbol of Lorient's Ligue 1 stability during the 2000s-2010s.
