History of Al-Hilal
Founding and Early Years
Al-Hilal was founded in 1957 in Riyadh as "Olympic Club," before being renamed "Al-Hilal" (The Crescent) by King Saud bin Abdulaziz in December 1958, among other names considered at the time such as "Al-Yamama" or "Al-Wahda."
Club Evolution
Nicknamed "Al-Za'eem" (The Boss), the club plays at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, opened in 2024 to replace the older King Fahd International Stadium. In April 2026, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) sold 70% of the club to Kingdom Holding Company, chaired by Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, making Al-Hilal the first of Saudi Arabia's "Big Four" clubs to leave PIF's fold.
Great Managers
Anghel Iordănescu won the Asian Club Championship in 2000, Razvan Lucescu the AFC Champions League in 2019, and Leonardo Jardim a record fourth continental title in 2021. Jorge Jesus (2023-2024) led the club to a historic unbeaten run and the 2023-24 league title.
Iconic Players
Sami Al-Jaber, a historic club legend with 177 goals before later managing the side, embodies the club's Saudi golden era. More recently, Neymar (2023), Rúben Neves, Darwin Núñez and João Cancelo joined the project, before Karim Benzema's arrival in February 2026 from Al-Ittihad.
Major Achievements
Al-Hilal hold the Saudi record with 21 league titles and remain Asia's most decorated club with 4 AFC Champions League titles (1991, 2000, 2019, 2021), plus a runner-up finish at the 2022 FIFA Club World Cup.
The Club Today
Coached by Simone Inzaghi and chaired by Prince Nawaf bin Saad Al Saud, Al-Hilal finished the 2025-26 season unbeaten (25 wins, 9 draws, 0 losses) yet still lost the title to Al-Nassr.
