About Serie A
History
Italian football's championship has existed in various forms since the early 20th century, but Serie A took its current shape, with a single national group, from the 1929-30 season onward. The competition established itself over the decades as one of Europe's most tactical and competitive leagues. The 20-club format has been in place since the 2004-05 season. Italy was one of the very first nations to trial Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, with tests starting in the 2016-17 season before full adoption the following year, in 2017-18.
