Portuguese Federation Bans Cristiano Ronaldo After Jorge Jesus Row

The Portuguese Football Federation's disciplinary council has suspended Cristiano Ronaldo for 30 days and fined him €255. The Portugal captain was found guilty of a deliberate disciplinary offence for leaving the national team camp without permission during the last international break.

The Minimum Penalty

Ronaldo faced a ban of between one and six months plus a fine, but ultimately received the minimum. The suspension runs until October 30, before the next international window, making it largely symbolic in practice.

How the Row With Jorge Jesus Started

The dispute began after the Nations League game against Norway, when Ronaldo stayed on the bench for the entire match despite warming up, having expected at least a few minutes. Tensions escalated when head coach Jorge Jesus told a press conference that he had the final say on the line-up and would not give any player special treatment, whatever his status.

Ronaldo responded by leaving the camp on September 30, on the eve of the trip to Denmark, before issuing a statement apologising to fans and teammates while accusing Jesus of breaking earlier promises to play him.

Will Ronaldo Return to the National Team?

On paper, Ronaldo will be available for the home game against Denmark on November 14 and the trip to Wales on November 17. However, his return depends on whether Jesus calls him up, and on the player's own willingness to continue under the current coach. Federation president Pedro Proença said everyone at the federation wants to see Ronaldo back in the national team once the matter is settled.
