For England supporters, the feeling was an unpleasantly familiar one. A team with world-class talent, unable to unlock a well-organised lower-ranked opponent, trudging off to jeers and groans. The 0-0 draw against Ghana in Foxborough left the Three Lions looking flat and uninspired after their promising 4-2 opening win over Croatia.

The midfield lacked tempo, the front three — blessed with quality on paper — struggled to create coherent chances, and Ghana's disciplined defensive block of five proved impenetrable. Goalkeeper Anta Wuteh made two sharp saves in the second half as England belatedly pushed for a winner, while Harry Kane blazed a golden opportunity over the bar from close range on 78 minutes.

Ghana, unbeaten and competitive, showed exactly why African teams are consistently underestimated heading into these tournaments. Their organisation and collective spirit earned a deserved point.

England still top Group L on four points and need only to avoid defeat against Panama in their final group game to advance, but the performance will have done little to convince anyone they are true contenders for the trophy.
