About the Primeira Liga

History

Portugal's national championship was founded in 1934 under the name Campeonato da Liga da Primeira Divisão. It took the name Campeonato Nacional da Primeira Divisão from 1938 onward, before adopting its current name, "Primeira Liga," in 1999. The competition has been contested by 18 clubs since the 2014-15 season. Portuguese football is defined by the historic dominance of three clubs — Benfica, Porto, and Sporting CP — who have shared almost all of the league's titles since its creation.
