History of Atlanta United
Founding and Early Years
Atlanta United FC was awarded its expansion franchise on 16 April 2014, driven by Arthur Blank, Home Depot co-founder and owner of the NFL's Atlanta Falcons. The club began MLS play in 2017, as the league's 22nd team.
Club Evolution
Nicknamed "Five Stripes," the club wear Victory Red, black, and gold; the five stripes in their crest symbolise unity, determination, community, excellence, and innovation. Atlanta United play at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, shared with the Falcons.
Great Managers
Gerardo "Tata" Martino (2017-2018) led the club to the 2018 MLS Cup in just their second season of existence, one of the fastest rises in league history. Martino returned to lead the club again in 2025.
Iconic Players
Josef Martínez, the club's and MLS's record scorer during his 2018 record-breaking season, was named league MVP and MLS Cup Final MVP that same year. Miguel Almirón (2017-2019, then returned in 2025) also embodies the club's attacking identity.
Major Achievements
Atlanta United have won one MLS Cup (2018), one US Open Cup (2019), and one Campeones Cup (2019, against Club América), though they have not won a Supporters' Shield.
