History of Columbus Crew
Founding and Early Years
Columbus Crew was announced as one of MLS's ten founding members on 15 June 1994 and played its first match in 1996. In 1999, the club opened the first soccer-specific stadium built in the United States in the modern era.
Club Evolution
Nicknamed "The Massive," Columbus Crew wear black and gold. In 2017-2018, the club narrowly escaped an attempted relocation to Austin, a threat repelled by the grassroots "Save the Crew" campaign and the buyout by Haslam Sports Group.
Great Managers
Sigi Schmid (2006-2008) led the club to its first MLS Cup in 2008, paired with a Supporters' Shield the same season. Wilfried Nancy (2023-2025) won a third MLS Cup in 2023, before his departure for Celtic FC.
Iconic Players
Brian McBride, the very first pick in MLS Draft history, is the first legend inducted into the club's Circle of Honor. Guillermo Barros Schelotto was named league MVP in 2008, the only Crew player to receive that honour. Frankie Hejduk, the captain, scored the decisive goal in the 2008 MLS Cup final.
Major Achievements
Columbus Crew have won three MLS Cups (2008, 2020, 2023), three Supporters' Shields (2004, 2008, 2009), one US Open Cup (2002), and one Campeones Cup (2021).
