History of Chicago Fire

Founding and Early Years

Chicago Fire was founded on 8 October 1997, a date chosen to mark the 126th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The club began MLS play in 1998.

Club Evolution

The club's name and identity directly reference the 1871 Great Fire; its original crest drew on the Cross of St. Florian, patron saint of firefighters. After several stadiums, including Toyota Park, Chicago Fire have played since 2020 at Soldier Field, awaiting a new stadium planned for 2028.

Great Managers

Bob Bradley (1998-2002), the club's inaugural coach, delivered the historic MLS Cup-US Open Cup double in the very first season, 1998, making Chicago Fire the first-ever expansion team to win MLS Cup.

Iconic Players

Peter Nowak, the inaugural captain, was named league MVP in 2000. Cuauhtémoc Blanco (2007-2010) drew crowds through his popularity in Mexico, while Bastian Schweinsteiger (2017-2019), a World Cup and Champions League winner, joined the club late in his career.

Major Achievements

Chicago Fire have won one MLS Cup (1998), one Supporters' Shield (2003), and four US Open Cups (1998, 2000, 2003, 2006), a record total shared in MLS.

The Club Today

Led by Gregg Berhalter since 2025 and chaired by Joe Mansueto, owner since 2019, Chicago Fire are enjoying a strong start to the 2026 season, carrying a new stadium project in Chicago's South Loop.
