History of San Jose Earthquakes
Founding and Early Years
San Jose Earthquakes were born in 1996 as the San Jose Clash, one of MLS's ten founding members, before taking their current name in 2000. In 2005, the club's organisation and roster were relocated to Houston, where they became the Dynamo. A new expansion franchise, reviving the Earthquakes name and history, was created in 2008.
Club Evolution
Nicknamed "Quakes," referencing the San Francisco Bay Area's seismic activity, the club have played since 2015 at PayPal Park. Under an MLS ruling, trophies won before 2006 remain officially attached to the Earthquakes name and history, despite the club's move to Houston.
Great Managers
Frank Yallop, coach of both the club's title-winning eras (2001-2003 and 2008-2013), won two MLS Cups and one Supporters' Shield. Dominic Kinnear led the team to the 2005 Supporters' Shield, in the club's final season in San Jose before the move to Houston.
Iconic Players
Landon Donovan (2001-2004) took part in both MLS Cup titles before joining the LA Galaxy. Chris Wondolowski, the face of the post-2008 era, became MLS's all-time regular-season leading scorer.
Major Achievements
San Jose Earthquakes have won two MLS Cups (2001, 2003) and two Supporters' Shields (2005, 2012), without ever winning the US Open Cup.
