History of New York City FC
Founding and Early Years
New York City FC was founded on 21 May 2013, MLS's 20th franchise, born from a partnership between City Football Group and the New York Yankees. The club began MLS play in 2015 and have played since at Yankee Stadium, in the Bronx.
Club Evolution
Nicknamed "The Boys in Blue" or "The Pigeons," the club wear sky blue, navy, and orange, with pinstripe touches inspired by the Yankees on their early kits. A permanent stadium, Etihad Park, is planned in Willets Point, Queens.
Great Managers
Patrick Vieira (2016-2018) laid the club's foundations and secured its first playoff berth. Ronny Deila (2020-2022) delivered NYCFC's first-ever trophy, the 2021 MLS Cup, won against Portland Timbers on penalties.
Iconic Players
David Villa, the club's first star signing from 2015, is its all-time top scorer with 77 goals and was named league MVP in 2016. Maxi Moralez (2017-2023) is still considered the club's second-greatest player.
Major Achievements
New York City FC have won one MLS Cup (2021) and one Campeones Cup (2022), without a Supporters' Shield or US Open Cup.
