History of Real Salt Lake
Founding and Early Years
Real Salt Lake was founded on 14 July 2004, its name paying tribute to Real Madrid, and began MLS play on 2 April 2005. The club first played at Rice-Eccles Stadium before moving in 2008 into their own stadium in Sandy, whose groundbreaking was attended by Real Madrid representatives and David Beckham.
Club Evolution
Nicknamed "Claret and Cobalt," the club combine claret, symbolising fan passion, with cobalt blue evoking Utah's mountains and lakes, and gold referencing the royal theme suggested by the name "Real."
Great Managers
Jason Kreis (2007-2013) remains the club's founding figure: he won the 2009 MLS Cup, becoming the youngest coach to lift the trophy, added the 2010 Supporters' Shield, and led the team to the first-ever CONCACAF Champions League final played by a US club, in 2011.
Iconic Players
Kyle Beckerman, the iconic captain, Nick Rimando, the club's all-time appearance leader in goal, and Javier Morales, the playmaker, form the central trio of the victorious 2009 generation.
Major Achievements
Real Salt Lake have won one MLS Cup (2009) and one Supporters' Shield (2010), also playing an MLS Cup final (2013) and a CONCACAF Champions League final (2011), without ever winning the US Open Cup.

Led by Pablo Mastroeni and chaired by Steve Miller since the Miller family's takeover of the club in 2025, Real Salt Lake sit in a playoff qualification position in the Western Conference in 2026.
