History of CF Montréal
Founding and Early Years
The club was founded on 10 December 1992 by the Saputo family as the Montreal Impact, playing successively in the A-League then the NASL before joining MLS in 2012, as the league's third Canadian club after Toronto FC and Vancouver.
Club Evolution
The club took the name CF Montréal (Club de Foot Montréal) in January 2021. They play at Saputo Stadium, opened in 2008 and partly financed by the owning family, occasionally using the Olympic Stadium for major matches. Their historic crest combines a fleur-de-lis with four stars symbolising Montreal's founding communities.
Great Managers
Wilfried Nancy (2021-2022) remains the club's most significant figure: he won the 2021 Canadian Championship in his first season, then delivered the club's best-ever regular season in 2022, before leaving to win MLS Cup with Columbus. Frank Klopas and Marco Schällibaum each added a Canadian Championship, in 2014 and 2013 respectively.
Iconic Players
Marco Di Vaio (2012-2014), the club's first star MLS signing, scored 34 goals. Didier Drogba joined the club in 2015 for a memorable season, while Patrice Bernier, the Canadian international and long-time captain, embodies loyalty to the club across two decades.
Major Achievements
CF Montréal have won a record eleven Canadian Championships and played the 2015 CONCACAF Champions League final, lost to Club América, without ever winning MLS Cup or a Supporters' Shield.
The Club Today
Led on an interim basis by Philippe Eullaffroy since April 2026 and chaired by Joey Saputo, also owner of Italy's Bologna FC, CF Montréal are going through a difficult 2026 season outside playoff qualification positions.
