History of Vancouver Whitecaps
Founding and Early Years
Vancouver Whitecaps were founded in 1974 and began play in the NASL, before being awarded an MLS franchise in 2009 and joining the league in 2011. The club's name, inspired by the whitecap waves visible from the Lions Gate Bridge, symbolises both the snow-capped mountains and the Pacific Ocean.
Club Evolution
The club play at BC Place, which since its 2011 renovation has featured the world's largest cable-supported retractable roof. Between the NASL's collapse in 1984 and MLS entry, the Whitecaps also enjoyed a successful USL era, winning the 2006 title.
Great Managers
Tony Waiters led the club to its first major professional title, the 1979 NASL Soccer Bowl. Vanni Sartini (2021-2024) took the team to the playoffs in three of four seasons and won three consecutive Canadian Championships.
Iconic Players
Bob Lenarduzzi, present since the inaugural 1974 season, is a key figure of the 1979 title. Ryan Gauld embodies the club's attacking revival since 2021, while Thomas Müller, the German legend who joined in 2025 after 25 seasons at Bayern Munich, is one of the biggest international signings in MLS history.
Major Achievements
Vancouver Whitecaps won the 1979 NASL Soccer Bowl and a record five Canadian Championships (2015, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025), but lost their first two major MLS and CONCACAF finals in 2025: the CONCACAF Champions Cup final (0-5 against Cruz Azul) and the MLS Cup final (1-3 against Inter Miami).
The Club Today
Led by Jesper Sørensen since 2025 and chaired by Greg Kerfoot, Vancouver Whitecaps sit atop the Western Conference in 2026, confirming the momentum of their historic 2025 season.
