History of Seattle Sounders
Founding and Early Years
Seattle Sounders FC were awarded their expansion franchise on 13 November 2007 and began MLS play in 2009, with an inaugural 3-0 win over the New York Red Bulls. The club inherits the identity of earlier Seattle sides in the NASL and USL.
Club Evolution
Nicknamed "Rave Green," the club draw their colours from Puget Sound and the forests of the Pacific Northwest. The Sounders play at Lumen Field, shared with the NFL's Seahawks.
Great Managers
Sigi Schmid (2009-2016) laid the club's foundations with four consecutive US Open Cup titles. Brian Schmetzer (since 2016) became the club's most decorated coach, winning two MLS Cups (2016, 2019), the 2022 CONCACAF Champions League, a first for an MLS club, and the 2025 Leagues Cup.
Iconic Players
Osvaldo Alonso, captain of the inaugural era, embodies the club's identity. Clint Dempsey (2013-2018) joined the Sounders as the most expensive signing in MLS history at the time. Nicolás Lodeiro, the club's all-time assist leader, has been a mainstay since 2016.
Major Achievements
Seattle Sounders are the only MLS club to have won every trophy available to an MLS team: two MLS Cups, one Supporters' Shield, a record four US Open Cups, the 2022 CONCACAF Champions League, and the 2025 Leagues Cup.
