History of Al-Ettifaq

Founding and Early Years

Al-Ettifaq was founded in 1945 in Dammam, born from the merger of three clubs in the city at the initiative of Faris Al-Hamid, giving the club its name, which means "the agreement" or "unity" in Arabic.

Club Evolution

Nicknamed "Faris Ad-Dahna" (Knight of the Desert), the club plays at E'GO Stadium (formerly Al-Ettifaq Stadium), fully rebuilt between 2021 and 2023 for a capacity of around 15,000.

Great Managers

Khalil Al-Zayani, the club's former captain, led them to an unbeaten domestic title in 1982-83, before Ioan Andone guided Al-Ettifaq to their best-ever continental run, the round of 16 of the 2009 AFC Champions League. Steven Gerrard managed the club from 2023 to early 2025, without recapturing that level.

Iconic Players

Khalil Al-Zayani remains a historic figure at the club as both player and manager. More recently, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum, the England and Netherlands internationals who both came from the Premier League, wore the club's colors during the Gerrard era, before leaving in 2024 and 2026 respectively.

Major Achievements

Al-Ettifaq have won 2 Saudi league titles (1982-83, unbeaten, and 1986-87), along with the 1984 Arab Club Champions Cup, the first international trophy won by a Saudi club.

The Club Today

Coached by Arthur Papas since July 2026 and chaired by Samer Al-Misehal, Al-Ettifaq finished 7th in the 2025-26 championship and are entering a stabilization phase after the high-profile but inconsistent Steven Gerrard era.
