History of PSV

Founding and Early Years

PSV was founded on 31 August 1913 in Eindhoven as "Philips Sport Vereniging," a company club restricted to employees of the Philips electronics group until 1928. PSV and Philips hold the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous sponsorship in sport.

Club Evolution

Nicknamed "de Boeren" (The Farmers) or "the Red-and-Whites," the club plays at Philips Stadion in Eindhoven, opened in 1910 and substantially rebuilt since.

Great Managers

Kees Rijvers won three titles and the 1978 UEFA Cup, Guus Hiddink led the famous 1988 treble (league, cup, European Cup), and Bobby Robson delivered consecutive titles in the early 1990s. Peter Bosz (since 2023) completed a run of three consecutive titles between 2024 and 2026.

Iconic Players

Romário (1988-1993, 120 goals) and Ronaldo Nazário (1994-1996, 42 goals in 46 league games at just 17-19 years old) marked the club's Brazilian era, while homegrown Ruud van Nistelrooy is its local icon. Jerdy Schouten captains the current squad.

Major Achievements

PSV have won 27 Dutch league titles, the second-highest total behind Ajax, 11 KNVB Cups, one European Cup (1988, on penalties against Benfica) and a UEFA Cup (1978).

The Club Today

Coached by Dutchman Peter Bosz, PSV are reigning champions after completing a run of three consecutive titles (2023-24 to 2025-26), a continuity that contrasts with the instability at rivals Ajax and Feyenoord.
