History of Feyenoord

Founding and Early Years

Feyenoord was founded on 19 July 1908 in Rotterdam as "Wilhelmina," before becoming "Rotterdamsche Voetbal Vereeniging Feijenoord" in 1912, taking its name from the Feijenoord district. The club reached the Dutch top flight about twelve and a half years after founding and won their first national title sixteen years later.

Club Evolution

Nicknamed "De Trots van Zuid" (The Pride of the South), reflecting its working-class roots in south Rotterdam, the club plays at the legendary Stadion Feijenoord, nicknamed "De Kuip" (The Tub), opened in 1937. In June 2026, Feyenoord became full owners of their stadium.

Great Managers

Ernst Happel led Feyenoord to the first Dutch European Cup in 1970, Wiel Coerver won the 1974 UEFA Cup, and Bert van Marwijk the 2002 UEFA Cup at home. Arne Slot brought the title back in 2022-23 after a six-year wait, while Giovanni van Bronckhorst, already a title-winner in 2016-17, returned in June 2026 after a spell as an assistant coach at Liverpool.

Iconic Players

Coen Moulijn, "Mister Feyenoord" and the club's all-time appearance record holder (487 games), and Rinus Israël, a mainstay of the 1970 European Cup win, remain historic figures. Robin van Persie, a club academy product who became a star at Arsenal and Manchester United, returned as coach in 2025 before his 2026 dismissal.

Major Achievements

Feyenoord have won 16 league titles, 14 KNVB Cups, one European Cup (1970), two UEFA Cups (1974, 2002) and an Intercontinental Cup (1970).

The Club Today

Coached by Giovanni van Bronckhorst since June 2026 and led by new CEO Robert Eenhoorn, Feyenoord finished 2nd in the 2025-26 championship and qualified for the Champions League, a season marked by sporting instability that led to Robin van Persie's dismissal.
