Founding and Early Years

Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio was founded on 17 October 1907 in Bergamo by a group of students, taking the name of Atalanta, a heroine from Greek mythology renowned for her speed. The club adopted black and blue as its historic colours.

Club Evolution

Long a modest mid-table club, Atalanta play at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo and built their reputation on a youth academy recognised as one of the best in Italy, having produced numerous talents for Serie A and the national team.

Great Managers

Gian Piero Gasperini, who arrived in 2016, transformed the club radically with a bold, attacking style of play, propelling Atalanta to their first-ever Champions League appearances and to a 2024 Europa League final, which they won against a Bayer Leverkusen side that had been unbeaten all season.

Iconic Players

Josip Iličić defined the Gasperini era with his technical class, notably in a memorable 2020 Champions League quarter-final. Atalanta have also stood out for their ability to discover and develop numerous talents before their transfers to bigger European clubs.

Major Achievements

Atalanta have won one Coppa Italia (1962-63) and one Europa League (2023-24), the first European trophy in the club's history, having also reached five Coppa Italia finals (1987, 1996, 2019, 2021, 2024).

The Club Today

Led by Maurizio Sarri and chaired by Antonio Percassi, Atalanta have established themselves as regulars in European competition and one of the most admired sporting projects in Italian football over the past decade.
