History of Sassuolo
Founding and Early Years
Sassuolo Football Club was founded on 17 July 1920, remaining a local amateur club for decades. The modern club, Unione Sportiva Sassuolo Calcio, emerged from a refoundation and merger of the town's two clubs in 1974.
Club Evolution
Sassuolo play at the Mapei Stadium - Città del Tricolore, in Reggio Emilia, owned by Mapei, the building-materials group founded by the Squinzi family. Nicknamed "Neroverdi" (black and green), colours adopted in 1970-71, the club's modern rise began in 2002 under the drive of Giorgio Squinzi.
Great Managers
Eusebio Di Francesco (2012-2017) delivered Sassuolo's first-ever Serie A promotion in 2012-13 and consolidated their place in the top flight. Roberto De Zerbi (2018-2021) then established an attacking, possession-based identity, leading the club to their best-ever season, a 6th-place finish in 2020-21 that brought their first-ever European qualification.
Iconic Players
Domenico Berardi, who stayed loyal to the club throughout his career, is its all-time top scorer and won Euro 2020 with Italy. Manuel Locatelli and Giacomo Raspadori, both developed at the club and also Euro 2020 winners, embody the success of Sassuolo's academy before their moves to bigger clubs.
Major Achievements
Sassuolo have never won Serie A or the Coppa Italia, but have been crowned Serie B champions twice (2012-13, 2024-25), the latter marking an immediate return to Serie A after a single season in the second tier.
