AC Pisa 1909

Founding and Early Years

AC Pisa 1909 was founded in 1909 in Pisa, as its name indicates. The club adopted black and blue as its colours, earning its players the nickname "Nerazzurri," and is also nicknamed "I Torri" (The Towers) in reference to the city's famous Leaning Tower.

Club Evolution

Pisa play at the Arena Garibaldi, inaugurated in 1919 and renamed Stadio Romeo Anconetani in tribute to the club's historic president, who led the club from 1978 to 1995. A byword for Italian football's "yo-yo club" phenomenon, Pisa have moved up and down between the country's professional divisions many times over.

Great Managers

The Anconetani era (1978-1995) remains the club's most successful period, with several promotions to Serie A (1982, 1985, 1987, 1990) and two Mitropa Cups. More recently, Filippo Inzaghi brought Pisa back to Serie A in 2024-25, ending a 34-year absence, finishing runner-up in Serie B.

Iconic Players

Defender Pasquale Bruno emerged at Pisa before a major Serie A career. Brazilian playmaker Dirceu also left his mark during the club's top-flight spell in the 1980s. Diego Simeone, later the legendary Atlético Madrid manager, also wore the Pisa shirt in the early 1990s.

Major Achievements

Pisa have won several Serie B titles as well as two Mitropa Cups (1985, 1988), the historic European competition reserved for Central European clubs.

The Club Today

Led by Paolo Bianco, Pisa play in Serie B for the 2026-27 season, following a 2025-26 campaign defined by their long-awaited return to Serie A.
