Founding and Early Years

Hellas Verona was founded in the spring of 1903 by students of the Liceo Scipione Maffei classical high school in Verona; the name "Hellas," Ancient Greek for "Greece," is said to have been suggested by one of the school's classics teachers.

Club Evolution

The club play at the Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi, their home since 1963, renovated for the 1990 World Cup. Their yellow-and-blue colours (gialloblù) come from Verona's civic coat of arms, while their nicknames "Mastini" (Mastiffs) and "Scaligeri" reference the medieval della Scala dynasty that once ruled the city.

Great Managers

Osvaldo Bagnoli (1982-1990) remains the club's defining figure: he led Verona to their historic 1984-85 Scudetto, one of the greatest upsets in Italian football history. Cesare Prandelli, later Italy's national team manager, won the Serie B title in 1998-99 with the club.

Iconic Players

Preben Elkjær-Larsen, the flamboyant Danish striker, embodies the 1984-85 title, remembered for his spectacular style of play. Alongside him, Hans-Peter Briegel, the physically dominant German sweeper, formed the defensive backbone of that legendary side.

Major Achievements

Hellas Verona have won one Scudetto (1984-85), one of the greatest upsets in Italian league history, along with three Serie B titles (1956-57, 1981-82, 1998-99).

The Club Today

Led by Marco Baroni, back in charge since 2026, and chaired by Italo Zanzi since January 2025, Hellas Verona play in Serie B for the 2026-27 season following relegation confirmed in April 2026, aiming for a quick return to Serie A.
