History of Telstar
Founding and Early Years
Telstar was born on 17 July 1963 from the merger of the professional sections of two rival clubs in the IJmuiden area, VSV and Stormvogels, and takes its name from the Telstar 1 communications satellite, launched the same year.
Club Evolution
Nicknamed "De Witte Leeuwen" (The White Lions) after their all-white home kit, Telstar have traditionally entered the pitch to the Tornados' famous "Telstar" instrumental since their founding, a unique tradition in Dutch football. The club plays at Sportpark Schoonenberg, with a capacity of around 6,000.
Great Managers
Jan Rab led the club to their best-ever league finish, 6th place, during their original Eredivisie spell (1963-1978), while Anthony Correia (2024-2026) brought Telstar back to the top flight after a 47-year absence, before joining FC Utrecht.
Iconic Players
Glynor Plet, the club's all-time top scorer with 90 goals, and Barry Opdam, who broke out at Telstar before a fine career at AZ, remain standout figures at a club known as a stepping stone to bigger destinations.
