History of Sparta Rotterdam
Founding and Early Years
Sparta Rotterdam was founded on 1 April 1888 by eight teenagers from wealthy families, making it the oldest professional football club in the Netherlands. A club delegation adopted Sunderland AFC's red-and-white striped shirt in 1899 after watching them play in England.
Club Evolution
Nicknamed "Kasteelclub" (Castle Club) after its castle-shaped pavilion, the club plays at Sparta Stadion Het Kasteel, opened in 1916, the first club-owned stadium in the Netherlands.
Great Managers
Englishman Denis Neville (1955-1963) led Sparta to their sixth and most recent league title in 1958-59, the club's only title in the fully professional era, while Alex Pastoor (2015-2017) secured promotion to the Eredivisie in 2016.
Iconic Players
Adri van Tiggelen, who debuted at the club in 1978 before becoming a Dutch international and Euro '88 winner, is a standout figure. The current squad includes Dutch international defender Bruno Martins Indi, former Feyenoord captain Jens Toornstra, and Max de Ligt, younger brother of Matthijs de Ligt.
Major Achievements
Sparta Rotterdam were Dutch champions six times (1909, 1911, 1912, 1913, 1915, 1958-59) and have reached several KNVB Cup finals across their history, without a notable European run.
