AFC Ajax

Founding and Early Years

Ajax was founded on 18 March 1900 in Amsterdam by Floris Stempel, Carel Reeser and Johan Dade, after a first failed attempt in 1894. The club takes its name from the Greek hero Ajax and took eleven years to reach the Dutch top flight, winning their first Dutch Cup in 1917 and their first national title in 1918.

Club Evolution

Nicknamed "de Godenzonen" (Sons of the Gods), Ajax adopted their white shirt with a broad vertical red stripe in 1911, inspired by Amsterdam's city flag. The club has played at the Johan Cruyff Arena since 1996, renamed in Cruyff's honor after his death in 2016.

Great Managers

Rinus Michels built "Total Football" and won the club's first European Cup in 1971, continued by Ștefan Kovács (1972, 1973). Louis van Gaal won the 1995 Champions League with a golden generation (the de Boer brothers, Kluivert, Seedorf, Davids), while Erik ten Hag led the club to the 2019 Champions League semi-final and won two domestic titles.

Iconic Players

Johan Cruyff, a three-time Ballon d'Or winner and symbol of Total Football, Dennis Bergkamp, Marco van Basten, Edwin van der Sar and Frank Rijkaard embody the club's golden era, while Steven Berghuis remains part of the current squad.

Major Achievements

Ajax hold the Dutch record with 36 league titles and 20 KNVB Cups, along with 4 European Cups/Champions Leagues (1971, 1972, 1973, 1995), a UEFA Cup (1992) and a Cup Winners' Cup (1987).

The Club Today

Coached by Spaniard Míchel since June 2026, Ajax finished 5th in the 2025-26 championship, qualifying for the Conference League, a disappointing season marked by defensive fragility and instability following Erik ten Hag's departure.
