FC Utrecht

Founding and Early Years

FC Utrecht was founded on 1 July 1970, from the merger of three clubs in the city, DOS (Dutch champions in 1958), Elinkwijk, and Velox, with the municipality pushing for the union to guarantee professional football's survival in the city.

Club Evolution

Nicknamed "Domstedelingen" (Cathedral Citizens) or "Cupfighters" for their reputation as cup giant-killers, the club plays at Stadion Galgenwaard, opened in 1936 and substantially renovated between 1998 and 2003.

Great Managers

Erik ten Hag (2015-2017) forged his reputation at the club before joining Ajax, leading Utrecht close to European qualification and to a KNVB Cup final, while Dick Advocaat stabilized the club upon his 2018 arrival.

Iconic Players

Mark van der Maarel, a right-back who stayed loyal to the club from 2009 to 2024, and Sander van de Streek (2017-2023) remain standout figures, as does Sébastien Haller, who passed through the club before becoming an international star. Moroccan international Souffian El Karouani was the league's top assist provider in 2025-26.

Major Achievements

FC Utrecht have won two KNVB Cups (1985, 2003) and a Johan Cruyff Shield (2004), without ever winning the league title, their best-ever finish remaining 3rd in 1981.

The Club Today

Coached by Anthony Correia, who arrived in 2026 after keeping Telstar in the top flight, FC Utrecht contested a European play-off lost to Ajax in the 2025-26 season, a financially difficult year according to majority shareholder Frans van Seumeren.
