About the Eredivisie
History
The Eredivisie was founded in 1956 to professionalize Dutch football, which until then had been organized at amateur level. The competition quickly established itself as a major breeding ground for talent and innovative tactics, most notably through the "Total Football" developed by Ajax Amsterdam in the 1970s. Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology was introduced in the Eredivisie from the 2018-19 season. The Netherlands also hosted, in July 2016, the world's first-ever friendly match to use VAR in its current form, between PSV Eindhoven and FC Eindhoven.
Trophy roll
- AFC Ajax — 36 titles, the country's most decorated club.
- PSV — 26 titles.
- Feyenoord Rotterdam — 16 titles.
- AZ — 2 titles, in 1980-81 and 2008-09.
- FC Twente '65 — 1 title, in 2009-10.
Historic clubs
- AFC Ajax — The birthplace of "Total Football," multiple-time Champions League winner, known for its youth academy, De Toekomst.
- PSV — An Eindhoven club historically linked to the Philips corporation, winner of the European Cup in 1988.
- Feyenoord Rotterdam — The first Dutch club to win a European trophy (1970), famous for the passion of its De Kuip stadium.
- AZ — A club from Alkmaar, one of the few to have broken the dominance of the traditional big three.
Competition format
The Eredivisie is contested by 18 teams playing each other home and away, for a total of 34 matchdays between August and May.
The standings are determined by points earned:
- Win: 3 points
- Draw: 1 point
- Loss: 0 points
At the end of the season:
- The champion is crowned Eredivisie winner.
- The bottom two clubs are directly relegated to the Eerste Divisie, while the 16th-placed side enters a playoff (Nacompetitie).
- The top teams qualify for UEFA's European competitions.
Qualification for UEFA competitions
The Eredivisie's best-placed clubs earn qualification for continental competitions organized by UEFA:
- UEFA Champions League
- UEFA Europa League
- UEFA Europa Conference League
The number of Champions League spots (usually one direct spot) depends on the Netherlands' UEFA coefficient, while an extra Conference League spot often goes to the KNVB Cup winner.
