Founding and Early Years
FC Twente was founded on 1 July 1965 in Enschede, from the merger of Sportclub Enschede, Dutch champions in 1926, and Enschedese Boys, founded in 1906, after neither club could afford to finance professional football separately.
Club Evolution
Nicknamed "De Tukkers" or "Trots van het Oosten" (Pride of the East), the club plays at De Grolsch Veste, opened in 1998 and expanded several times to its current capacity of over 30,000.
Great Managers
Kees Rijvers (1966-1972) built the club's first competitive era, while Englishman Steve McClaren (2008-2010) led FC Twente to their only-ever league title in 2009-10, becoming the first English coach to win the Dutch championship since Bobby Robson.
Iconic Players
Blaise Nkufo, the club's all-time top scorer (114 goals) and honored with a statue at De Grolsch Veste, embodied the 2010 title alongside Wout Brama. Marko Arnautović, Luuk de Jong and Dušan Tadić also passed through the club before going on to major European careers.
Major Achievements
FC Twente won their only-ever league title in 2009-10 and three KNVB Cups (1977, 2001, 2011), along with reaching the 1975 UEFA Cup final, lost to Borussia Mönchengladbach.
