SC Heerenveen

Founding and Early Years

SC Heerenveen was founded on 20 July 1920 in Friesland as "Athleta," renamed "Spartaan" then "v.v. Heerenveen" in 1922. The professional section, split off in 1977 due to financial difficulties, took the name "sc Heerenveen" and became the first Frisian club to reach the Eredivisie in 1990.

Club Evolution

Nicknamed "De Superfriezen" (The Super Frisians), the club plays at Abe Lenstra Stadion, opened in 1994 and named after the club's greatest-ever legend. The Frisian anthem is traditionally sung before home matches, a unique tradition in the Eredivisie.

Great Managers

Foppe de Haan (1985-1988, 1992-2004) lastingly developed the club's attacking, youth-driven football, while Gertjan Verbeek (2004-2008) delivered two 5th-place finishes before later winning the KNVB Cup with AZ.

Iconic Players

Abe Lenstra, an absolute legend of the club and of Dutch football, is famous for a memorable comeback from 1-5 down to a 6-5 win over Ajax in the 1940s. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar broke out as a prolific scorer before moving on to Ajax and then Real Madrid, while Ruud van Nistelrooy and Jon Dahl Tomasson also passed through the club.

Major Achievements

SC Heerenveen won their only KNVB Cup in 2008-09, on penalties against FC Twente, without ever winning the league, their best-ever finish remaining runner-up in 1999-2000, which brought Champions League qualification.

The Club Today

Coached by Dutchman Robin Veldman, SC Heerenveen finished 8th in the 2025-26 championship, confirming their status as a stable mid-table club.
