Fortuna Sittard

Founding and Early Years

Fortuna Sittard was born on 1 July 1968 from a financially-forced merger of two Limburg clubs, Fortuna '54, a two-time KNVB Cup winner (1957, 1964) and 1957 league runner-up, and Sittardia, a more modest club regularly fighting relegation battles.

Club Evolution

The club wears yellow (inherited from Sittardia) and green (inherited from Fortuna '54), combined at the merger, and plays at Fortuna Sittard Stadion, with a capacity of around 12,500.

Great Managers

Bert van Marwijk (1997-2000) developed several players there before joining Feyenoord, then later leading the Netherlands to the 2010 World Cup final, while Nigerian Sunday Oliseh (2016-2018) set a club record of eight consecutive home wins.

Iconic Players

Mark van Bommel, a future Netherlands captain who played for PSV, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AC Milan, came through the club's academy, alongside Kevin Hofland and Fernando Ricksen, both also academy products.

Major Achievements

Under the Fortuna '54 name, the club won the KNVB Cup in 1957 and 1964; under its current name, it has reached two lost cup finals (1984, 1999) and returned to the Eredivisie in 2018 after sixteen years away.

The Club Today

Coached by Danny Buijs, one of the Eredivisie's most stable coaches with a contract extended to 2027, Fortuna Sittard finished 11th in the 2025-26 championship, their best position among the league's smaller clubs.
