History of Go Ahead Eagles
Founding and Early Years
Go Ahead Eagles was founded in 1902 in Deventer as "Be Quick" by Leo zur Kleinsmiede and Karel Hollander. Renamed "Go Ahead" in 1905 at the Dutch FA's request to avoid confusion with a club of the same name, it added the "Eagles" suffix in 1971, referencing the eagle on the city's coat of arms.
Club Evolution
Nicknamed "Pride of the IJssel," the club plays at De Adelaarshorst ("The Eagle's Nest"), their home since 1920.
Great Managers
Erik ten Hag and Leo Beenhakker both had notable spells at the club before building their major reputations elsewhere, while Foeke Booy kept the club up in the Eredivisie in 2013-14.
Iconic Players
Raimond van der Gouw, later Manchester United's goalkeeper, and Marc Overmars, a future Ajax and Arsenal legend, both started at the club, as did Paul Bosvelt and Demy de Zeeuw. Mathis Suray, the club's top scorer in 2025-26, embodies the current squad.
Major Achievements
Go Ahead Eagles won four pre-war Dutch championships (1917, 1922, 1930, 1933), predating the Eredivisie's founding, and pulled off a shock in 2024-25 by winning their first-ever KNVB Cup, on penalties against AZ Alkmaar, a historic qualification for the Conference League.
