History of Auxerre
Founding and Early Years
AJ Auxerre was founded in 1905 by Abbé Ernest Deschamps, a priest who wanted to give the town's young people an educational sporting activity. The club settled in 1918 on land purchased along the Yonne river, which would become the Stade Abbé-Deschamps, named in tribute to its founder.
Club Evolution
Auxerre's history is inseparable from that of its youth academy, named France's best academy eight times, having produced seventeen France internationals.
Great Managers
Guy Roux remains the club's defining figure: manager from 1961 to 2005, 44 years in charge of the team, he took Auxerre from amateur level to Ligue 1 and Europe, playing 128 continental matches, including a 1993 UEFA Cup semi-final and a 1997 Champions League quarter-final, before delivering the historic league-and-cup double in 1996.
Iconic Players
Éric Cantona trained at AJA from 1981, before becoming a Manchester United legend. Laurent Blanc and Bernard Diomède, also academy products, won the 1998 World Cup with France, as did Basile Boli, a European champion with Marseille in 1993.
Major Achievements
AJ Auxerre have won one Ligue 1 title (1996) and four Coupe de France titles (1994, 1996, 2003, 2005), confirming their status as a benchmark club for youth development.

Led by Will Still since June 2026 and run by Baptiste Malherbe, under the majority ownership of Chinese businessman James Zhou since 2016, AJ Auxerre are playing their third consecutive season in Ligue 1.
