History of Lyon
Founding and Early Years
Olympique Lyonnais was founded on 3 August 1950, though the name is associated with an earlier multi-sport Lyon entity dating back to 1899. Long a mid-table club, OL played at the Stade de Gerland for 65 years before moving in 2016 to a new stadium, today named Groupama Stadium.
Club Evolution
Nicknamed "Les Gones" (the kids, in Lyonnais dialect), the club wear blue, white, and red. OL enjoyed their golden age in the 2000s, setting a French record of seven consecutive league titles.
Great Managers
Paul Le Guen (2002-2005) won three of the seven consecutive titles and led the club to a Champions League quarter-final. Gérard Houllier (2005-2007) continued the run with two further titles, extending the historic streak to seven straight championships between 2002 and 2008.

Juninho Pernambucano, the legendary free-kick specialist, scored around a hundred goals and embodies the seven-title era. Karim Benzema, an academy product, broke through between 2005 and 2009 before joining Real Madrid. Sonny Anderson led OL to their first-ever league title in the 1990s.
