History of Angers
Founding and Early Years
Angers SCO was founded in 1919, playing their first-ever official match on 19 October 1919 against Stade Nantes Université Club, the ancestor of today's FC Nantes.
Club Evolution
Nicknamed "Les Scoïstes," the club wear black and white. They play at the Stade Raymond-Kopa, renamed in 2017 in tribute to Raymond Kopa, a player developed at the club before becoming a Real Madrid legend and the 1958 Ballon d'Or winner.
Great Managers
Angers SCO's history is not defined by a lineage of iconic managers, but by periods of stability, notably in the 1960s-70s, when the club reached several Coupe de France semi-finals and qualified for the 1972 UEFA Cup.
Iconic Players
Raymond Kopa, developed at the club before joining Stade de Reims and then Real Madrid, remains the most prestigious figure associated with Angers, as reflected in the name of its stadium.
Major Achievements
Angers SCO have never won Ligue 1, but have been crowned Ligue 2 champions twice (1969, 1976) and played two Coupe de France finals, in 1957 and 2017, without winning either.
The Club Today
Led by Stéphane Gilli and chaired by Romain Chabane since 2023, with his father Saïd Chabane, the club's owner since 2011, chairing the supervisory board, Angers SCO finished the 2025-26 season in mid-table Ligue 1.
