History of NEC
Founding and Early Years
NEC was born in 1900 in Nijmegen as "Eendracht," founded by August Lodenstijn, Antoon Kuypers and Wouter de Lent, working-class men excluded from the city's established club, Quick 1888. In 1910, Eendracht merged with NVV Nijmegen to form "Nijmegen Eendracht Combinatie" (NEC).
Club Evolution
Once mockingly nicknamed "Nooit Eerste Classer" (Never First Division) before their first promotion in 1936, the club wears a distinctive red shirt with a green chestband and black trim. NEC play at the Goffertstadion, opened in 1939 and renovated in 2000.
Great Managers
Mario Been (2007-2009) rescued a disastrous start to a season and finished 8th, then led NEC into the 2008-09 UEFA Cup group stage, beating Spartak Moscow and Udinese. Rogier Meijer (2020-2025) won promotion in his first season and led the club to the 2024 KNVB Cup final, before joining Sparta Rotterdam.
Iconic Players
Sije Visser, the club's all-time appearance record holder (490 games), and Frans Janssen, the club's all-time top scorer (133 goals), are standout figures, as is Frans Thijssen, the first Dutchman voted England's Footballer of the Year (1981) after starting his professional career at NEC. Perr Schuurs and Jamiro Monteiro are part of the historic 2025-26 squad.
Major Achievements
NEC have never won the KNVB Cup despite six final appearances (1973, 1983, 1994, 2000, 2024, 2026), the last lost 5-1 to AZ Alkmaar. The 2025-26 season remains the finest in club history, with an unprecedented 3rd-place finish qualifying them for the Champions League for the first time.
